General Information
Overview
Codenvy provides on-demand developer workspaces that can be controlled from any integrated development environment, available as a download, a managed service or a hosted cloud offering. It addresses one of the most persistent and least discussed sources of lost engineering time: environment setup and drift. A new developer joining a project typically spends days installing dependencies, matching versions and troubleshooting configuration before writing any code, and thereafter every team member's machine diverges gradually until the phrase "it works on mine" becomes a recurring feature of the working week. Codenvy replaces per-machine setup with workspaces defined as code. A workspace specification declares the runtime, dependencies, tools, services and configuration a project requires, held in version control alongside the source. Any developer can then provision an identical, fully configured workspace on demand in minutes, running in containers on shared infrastructure rather than on a laptop. Because the definition is versioned, the environment evolves with the codebase and a developer checking out an older branch gets the environment that branch needs. Workspaces are accessible through a browser-based IDE or connected to a local editor of the developer's choice, which matters because developers are attached to their tooling and will resist a platform that dictates it. Collaboration features allow workspaces to be shared, enabling pair programming, code review in a running environment, and reproduction of a reported bug in exactly the state it occurred. For organisations, the model brings source code and development onto managed infrastructure rather than distributed machines, which has clear security benefits where intellectual property or regulated data is involved, and it makes onboarding contractors or distributed teams considerably faster. Codenvy's technology contributed to the Eclipse Che open-source project, and it is available under an open-source licence as well as commercially. A free version and free trial are available, with paid plans from around USD 30 per month.
