Surpass vs Examarius Comparison: Everything You Need to Know Before Choosing

Surpass is an assessment management platform used by awarding organisations, professional certification bodies, educational institutions and training providers to author, deliver and mark high-stakes examinations. It covers the full assessment lifecycle in one system, which matters because the alternative — authoring questions in documents, assembling papers by hand, delivering through a separate exam engine and marking on paper or in yet another tool — introduces both inefficiency and the risk of error in a context where errors carry serious consequences for candidates and for the credibility of the qualification being awarded. Item authoring supports a wide range of question types beyond multiple choice, including extended written responses, numerical entry, hotspot and drag-and-drop interactions, audio and video stimulus, and custom item types for specialist subjects. Items are held in a managed bank with metadata, versioning, review and approval workflows, and psychometric data attached, so questions can be reused across papers with full knowledge of their historical performance, difficulty and discrimination. Test construction assembles papers from the bank manually or through automated rules balancing syllabus coverage, difficulty and item exposure across sittings. Delivery accommodates the realities of high-stakes testing: online invigilated sessions, test centre networks, remote proctoring, and secure offline delivery for locations with unreliable connectivity, with lockdown browser controls, candidate authentication and incident logging throughout. Marking supports automatic scoring, on-screen human marking with anonymisation, double and blind marking, moderation and standardisation workflows, and examiner monitoring for consistency across a marking team. Results processing, grade boundary setting, certification and detailed reporting complete the cycle, with psychometric analysis feeding back into item quality for future sittings. Integration and APIs connect the platform to learning management, registration and certification systems. Surpass serves organisations where assessment validity, security and defensibility are paramount. Pricing starts from around USD 55; there is no free version and no free trial.
