Amazon S3
Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) is a cloud-based object storage that allows users to store and retrieve data from anywhere.
What is Amazon S3?
Amazon S3, or Amazon Simple Storage Service, is the object storage service of Amazon Web Services and one of the foundational building blocks of modern cloud computing. It allows organisations to store and retrieve virtually any amount of data from anywhere on the internet, removing the need to provision, scale and maintain physical storage hardware. S3 addresses the problems of capacity planning, durability and cost that accompany traditional storage by offering an elastic, pay-as-you-go model designed for eleven nines of data durability, with objects stored redundantly across multiple facilities. Data is organised into buckets and objects accessed through a simple API, an approach that has made S3 a de facto standard adopted by numerous compatible storage providers and applications.
S3 offers a range of storage classes tailored to different access patterns and costs, including S3 Standard, S3 Intelligent-Tiering, S3 Standard-Infrequent Access, S3 One Zone-IA, S3 Express One Zone for low-latency workloads, and the S3 Glacier classes for archiving. Lifecycle policies move data automatically between classes, while replication features copy objects across regions or accounts for resilience and compliance. Security capabilities include encryption by default, IAM and bucket policies, Block Public Access, access points, Object Lock for write-once-read-many retention, and detailed logging through AWS CloudTrail. Management and analytics tools such as S3 Storage Lens, Inventory, Batch Operations and event notifications help administrators understand and act on data at scale, and S3 Tables and S3 Vectors extend the service to analytics and AI workloads. S3 integrates with nearly every AWS service, including Athena, Lambda, CloudFront and SageMaker, making it central to data lakes, backup and recovery, content distribution, application hosting and machine learning pipelines. Its customers range from start-ups and developers to the largest enterprises and public sector bodies across all industries. Pricing is usage-based and is not published in this listing; AWS does, however, provide a limited free usage allowance for new accounts.
