What is AppSheet?
AppSheet is Google's no-code application platform, letting people build working applications from data they already hold without writing code. The workflow is characteristic and explains much of its appeal: a user points AppSheet at an existing data source — a Google Sheet, Excel workbook, Cloud SQL database, Salesforce object or other connected system — and the platform inspects the structure and generates a functioning mobile and web application from it automatically, complete with list views, detail forms and navigation. From that starting point the creator refines the app rather than constructing it from nothing, which is a far shorter path than beginning with a blank canvas.
Customisation covers view types including tables, decks, galleries, maps, calendars, charts and dashboards; data validation and conditional formatting; expressions for calculated columns and dynamic behaviour; and security filters that control which rows each user can see — important when one app serves staff across regions or departments. Native device capabilities are available without additional work, so apps can capture photographs, scan barcodes, record GPS location, collect signatures, read NFC tags and operate offline with automatic synchronisation when connectivity returns. That offline capability is what makes the platform genuinely useful for field work: inspections, site surveys, delivery confirmation, asset audits and maintenance logging continue in locations with no signal. Automation adds scheduled and event-triggered actions, email and notification sending, report generation and approval workflows, and AI features extract data from documents and images and add predictive columns. Integration with Google Workspace is close, and connections extend to other cloud services and APIs. Governance controls let IT departments manage who can publish apps and which data sources are permitted, addressing the shadow IT concern that no-code platforms otherwise raise. AppSheet suits operations teams, field services, logistics, construction, healthcare and any group currently running a process on a spreadsheet. A free version for personal use and a free trial are available, with paid plans from around USD 5 per user per month.
