BackupAssist is an on-premises backup solution that performs automatic, scheduled backups of Windows servers to a wide variety of destinations, aimed at small and mid-sized organisations that want their data protection under their own control rather than delegated entirely to a cloud service. The on-premises positioning is deliberate and remains genuinely relevant: businesses with large data volumes, limited upload bandwidth, regulatory constraints on where data may reside, or a need to restore quickly without downloading terabytes over an internet connection are poorly served by cloud-only backup. BackupAssist keeps the backup engine and the primary copies local while still supporting offsite replication for disaster recovery. Backup destinations are unusually flexible, covering local and external disks, rotated removable drives, network shares and NAS devices, tape, and cloud storage including Azure and Amazon S3, so an organisation can implement a genuine layered strategy rather than a single copy. Backup types cover full system images for bare-metal recovery, file and folder backups, and application-aware backups for Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server and Hyper-V that quiesce the application properly so the resulting copy is consistent and actually restorable — the point at which naive file-copy backups of live databases fail. Recovery options range from individual file restore, through mailbox and database item recovery, to full bare-metal restoration onto dissimilar hardware and virtual machine recovery. Scheduling, retention policies, media rotation schemes and automated reporting run without daily attention, and email notifications flag failures so a silent backup failure does not go unnoticed for months, which is the most common cause of catastrophic data loss. Encryption protects backups at rest and in transit, and backup verification tests integrity rather than assuming it. Additional capability covers cloud-to-cloud protection for Microsoft 365 data and ransomware-resistant immutable storage options. Typical users are IT departments and managed service providers supporting Windows Server environments. Pricing starts from around USD 279 with a free trial and no free version.
