Lookeen vs Agent Ransack Comparison: Everything You Need to Know Before Choosing

Agent Ransack is a Windows file search utility from Mythicsoft that helps users locate files on their computers and find content within those files quickly. Windows' built-in search can be slow, inconsistent and limited in its ability to handle complex queries, which frustrates developers, legal and compliance teams, IT administrators and knowledge workers who need to search large volumes of documents precisely. Agent Ransack addresses these shortcomings with a fast search engine that works without requiring a pre-built index, meaning results reflect the current state of the file system. Its approach emphasises powerful query options, such as regular expressions and Boolean expressions, combined with a clear results view that shows matching lines in context, allowing users to understand results without opening each file. The free Agent Ransack edition shares its core engine with FileLocator Pro, Mythicsoft's commercial product for professional and enterprise use. Key features include searching by file name, content, size, date and attributes, support for Boolean and regular expression queries, and content search within Microsoft Office documents, PDFs and compressed archives such as ZIP files. Results display matching lines with highlighting, and searches can be saved, exported and shared as reports. The commercial FileLocator Pro edition extends these capabilities with features such as indexed searching for very large datasets, scripting, command-line operation, OCR support for scanned documents and advanced reporting, making it suitable for e-discovery, data audits and compliance investigations. Deployment is on-premise, with installation on Windows desktops and servers, and the product can search local drives, network shares and mapped storage. It is used by software developers, IT support teams, legal professionals, researchers and organisations handling large document repositories. A free version is available, a free trial of the professional edition is offered, and paid licences start from around USD 10.
