ProWritingAid vs Sudowrite Comparison: Everything You Need to Know Before Choosing

ProWritingAid is a writing improvement tool that goes considerably further than a grammar checker, analysing text across a wide range of stylistic and structural dimensions to help writers produce clearer, stronger prose. Alongside the expected checks for grammar, spelling and punctuation, it runs more than twenty separate reports examining specific weaknesses: overuse of passive voice, sticky sentences clogged with glue words, repeated words and phrases, sentence length variation, reliance on adverbs and clichés, vague or abstract wording, inconsistent spelling conventions, pacing, dialogue tags, transitions, readability scores and more. Each report explains why a pattern weakens the writing rather than simply flagging it, which is what makes the tool genuinely instructive — users tend to write better over time, not just fix the current document. Terminology management and style consistency matter for professional and organisational use. Custom style guides and house rules can be defined so a team's preferred terminology, capitalisation and conventions are enforced across everyone's output, and personal dictionaries prevent repeated flagging of legitimate specialist vocabulary. The tool works where writers already work, with integrations and extensions for Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Scrivener, Chrome and other browsers, desktop applications for Windows and macOS, and a web editor, so there is no requirement to change workflow. AI-assisted features suggest rewrites, expansions and tone adjustments, and critique reports give higher-level feedback on a manuscript as a whole. The breadth of analysis makes ProWritingAid particularly popular with novelists and long-form writers, who benefit from reports on pacing, dialogue and repetition that shorter-form tools ignore, but it is equally used by academics, business writers, content teams, students and editors. Reports can be exported for reference, and progress is tracked over time. A free version with limited word counts is available alongside a free trial, with paid plans starting from around USD 20 and lifetime licences also offered.
