Black Duck is a software composition analysis solution, originally developed by Black Duck Software and later part of Synopsys before being established as the independent company Black Duck Software, that helps organisations secure and manage the open source components embedded in their applications. Modern software is largely assembled from open source libraries, which introduces risks in the form of known vulnerabilities, incompatible licence obligations and outdated or unmaintained dependencies. Black Duck addresses this by automatically discovering every open source component in a codebase, including transitive dependencies and code snippets, and mapping each one against a curated knowledge base of projects, versions, licences and security advisories. Its core approach combines multiple scanning techniques, such as package manager analysis, signature scanning, binary analysis and snippet matching, to produce an accurate software bill of materials. Once components are identified, the platform flags known vulnerabilities with enriched research data, severity scores and remediation guidance, and highlights licence conflicts that could create legal exposure. Policy management lets security and legal teams define rules for acceptable licences, vulnerability thresholds and component age, which can then fail builds or raise alerts automatically. Black Duck integrates with common development and DevOps tools, including source repositories, IDEs, build systems, CI/CD pipelines such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions and Azure DevOps, and issue trackers like Jira, so that findings reach developers early. It supports SBOM generation and export in standard formats such as SPDX and CycloneDX to satisfy regulatory and customer requirements, and continuous monitoring notifies teams when new vulnerabilities affect previously scanned applications. The solution can be deployed on premises or consumed as a hosted service and is used by enterprises in software, financial services, automotive, healthcare and government, as well as in merger and acquisition due diligence.
